Christmas Tree Train Sets: How to Pick One That Fits Around Your Tree

One of the photos on our Christmas Train Set page is a close-up of the silver locomotive with five little red tags on it: smoke, water inlet, on/off switch, light, battery box. Between them, those tags cover half the questions parents ask about a Christmas tree train. Batteries mean no cord snaking across the living room floor. The smoke comes from plain water. And the switch sits where a five year old can reach it.

What the box cannot tell you is whether it will fit around your tree.

That part is on you and a tape measure, and this guide walks through it. We, the team behind Atlasonix, sell two train sets that work under a tree, so we will cover both, and we will be clear about where a hobby train is the better choice.

The short answer

If you want... Pick Why
A festive train with smoke and sounds that a 3 to 8 year old can build and run Atlasonix Christmas Train Set with Lights and Sounds Holiday colors, odorless water smoke, headlights and sounds, snap-together track
A smaller loop with a known footprint for a slim tree or a tabletop tree Classic Train Set Track makes a 30 inch circle or a 30 x 42 inch oval, runs on 2 AA batteries
A heavy display train that runs every December for twenty years A hobby O gauge set from a model railroad brand Plug-in power and bigger curves, at a much higher price

How much space does a Christmas tree train need?

Measure the tree, not the box. A tall tree can still be narrow at the stand, and a short, full one can swallow a whole loop of track.

  1. Lay a tape measure across the widest point of the tree stand or the lowest branches, whichever is wider. That is the inside of your loop.
  2. Add a few inches on every side. Train cars swing out on curves, and you do not want the coal car brushing the stand on every lap.
  3. Check the height of the lowest branches. The engine has to pass underneath without catching tinsel or a hanging ornament.
  4. Look at the floor. A hard floor or a low rug is easiest. Thick carpet can make light track shift.

Our Classic Train track snaps into a 30 inch circle or a 30 x 42 inch oval. That fits around a tree stand, a slim or pencil tree, or a tabletop tree, and runs happily beside a bigger one. It will not circle the full spread of a wide 7 foot tree at floor level. If your tree is wide, we would run the train in an oval in front of it, or put it on a low platform where the tree is narrower.

For our Christmas Train we are not publishing a loop size yet, because we want to confirm it with a measured layout before we print a number. If space is tight, contact us before you order and we will check it for you.

Battery or plug-in?

Both of our sets run on batteries. We chose that for kids: no transformer, no cord to trip over at 6 am on Christmas morning, and the train can move from under the tree to the playroom in January. The tradeoff is that batteries run down, so keep spares in the drawer.

Hobby trains usually plug in. They run longer and steadier, and they cost far more. If the train is mainly decoration for adults, plug-in is the better fit, and we would point you to a model railroad shop.

Smoke trains and kids

The smoke on our Christmas Train comes from water. The engine has a water inlet on top, and the set includes a small water bottle for filling it. The product page describes the smoke as odorless. We like this for families because there is no smoke fluid to buy and store.

A grown-up should handle the first fill and show the kids how much water goes in.

Spills on a tree skirt dry; spills inside a toy engine are a different story.

Who is the train for: the kid or the display?

This is the question we would ask before anything else, and it changes the answer more than size does. Our sets are toys first. The Christmas Train is listed for ages 3 to 8, its snap-together track lets children build their own layouts, and it comes in two styles: Premium in silver and red, or Classic in green and gold. The Classic Train Set comes with a steam locomotive, 3 train cars, 6 curved and 2 straight tracks, and 4 toy horses for pretend play, with lights and sounds on the engine. Kids can take these apart and rebuild them all through the holidays, and that is the point. A hobby O gauge train is different: a display piece that adults set up once and admire, with a price to match and more fragile detail. Neither is wrong. They are just different gifts. If the child on your list wants to play with it, pick one of ours. If the whole family wants a train to watch while the grown-ups drink coffee, a hobby set will make them happier.

How to keep a toy train from derailing

  • Snap every joint until it clicks, then run a finger along the rail to feel for a raised edge.
  • Keep the loop flat. A curve that runs over a fold in the tree skirt is the usual culprit.
  • Clear the track of pine needles every few days.
  • Slow down on corners if the engine has speed control, and teach little drivers the same.

Our two picks

Christmas Train Set with Lights and Sounds

Our Christmas Train Set includes a steam locomotive, passenger coach, coal car and cargo car, with sounds, headlights and odorless water smoke. It is the one we would put under the tree for a 3 to 8 year old who will want to run it all week.

Classic Train Set

The Classic Train Set is our pick when you know your space is small. The 30 inch circle is the most useful number in this whole guide if you are working with a narrow corner.

More trains and gift ideas are in our train sets collection and our holiday gifts for kids collection.

Frequently asked questions

What size train goes around a Christmas tree?

Measure the widest part of your tree stand or lowest branches, then add a few inches on each side for the cars to swing on curves. Our Classic Train Set makes a 30 inch circle or a 30 x 42 inch oval, which suits a slim tree, a tabletop tree, or a tree stand.

Can a toy train run on carpet?

Low pile rugs work. Thick carpet can let light track shift and cause derailments, so a hard floor or a board under the loop is better.

Do Christmas train sets need batteries?

Ours do. The Classic Train Set takes 2 AA batteries, and the Christmas Train has a battery box in the engine. Many hobby trains plug into the wall instead.

How does the smoke work on the Atlasonix Christmas Train?

You fill the engine through a water inlet on top using the included water bottle. The train turns that water into an odorless puff of smoke.

What age is a Christmas train set for?

Our Christmas Train Set is for ages 3 to 8, and our Classic Train Set suits ages 4 to 8. Hobby display trains are usually meant for older kids and adults.

How do I keep a Christmas train from derailing?

Click every track joint together, keep the loop on a flat surface, clear pine needles off the rails, and take the curves slowly.
